Shark Diving Indonesia branch of Derawan – named Manta Diving Indonesia – conducts Whale Shark Individual Identification Project which is seeking the different individuals in the Derawan Islands of East Kalimantan. This project is conducted to help the conservation efforts of the Whale Shark as the part of Derawan’s eco-tourism lifecycle.

So far, there are three individual is identified in Derawan, all of them are male whale shark. This gentle giant is expected to be sighted in Derawan Island area – only 10 minutes by speedboat from January to May. Other part of season, from May to December they are expected to be encountered in the Talisayan area.
